Voice of America, VOA News, visits Velveteria
Velvet fabric is often seen as a sign of luxury. As a canvas for art, however, velvet is considered by many to illustrate poor taste. Velvet art is considered “kitsch”, a gaudy, cheap style of art rarely displayed in art galleries or museums. But this hallmark of thrift shops and flea markets is embraced as fine art at Portland, Oregon’s Velveteria: Museum of Velvet Paintings.
The Velveteria in Portland, Oregon is out to change that. This small museum is dedicated solely to velvet paintings. VOA’s Yi Suli takes us for a tour of the Velveteria: Museum of Velvet Paintings. Elaine Lu narrates a shortened version in English. Click Here for video of VOA News visit to Velveteria.

HI
I purchased a piece of art on velvet, painted by L Mendez and even though I can not find him I will just keep looking, and it is one of the most beautiful pieces of a country place. I think it is really cool to see art on velvet and I remember we used to paint on velvet when I was a teen.
Keep up the good work and never give up.

I have three pieces of L. Mendez`s work. My grandmother bought them several years ago and I inherited them. They are beautiful. I wish that I could find info about the artist as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
