San Francisco’s gallery hosts velvet painting book
111 Minna Gallery presents “Black Velvet Masterpieces”
Wednesday August 13, 2008 – Kat Renz, from the San Francisco Bay Guardian, wrote a preview article about our book signing event at San Francisco’s 111 Minna Gallery.
Here are some of the excerpts:
Carl Baldwin and Caren Anderson leading authorities on black velvet paintings (BVPs) opened the Velveteria, a Portland, Ore., museum housing results of their decade-long scouring of thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets and antique malls. The couple have yet to hoard all the world’s BVPs, but they average about five new additions to their collection per week.
Baldwin and Anderson have compiled Black Velvet Masterpieces (Chronicle Books), 192 pages highlighting 275 works, including the obligatory weepy clowns, poker dogs, and celebrities from John Wayne to Snoop Dogg. Celebrate the release of the book, resist art snobbery, and start a BVP religion simultaneously.
Black Velvet Masterpieces book signing was held on Friday, August 15, 2008, 5–8 p.m. at San Francisco’s 111 Minna Gallery.
